Sinopse: The massive book is the result of 15 years of research. The book shows the wealth of historical, artistic and cultural development of the first Benedictine monastery in the New World, founded in 1582, and currently holding the largest private collection of artworks and second largest collection of rare books in Brazil. The site had a prominent role in major historical events of Bahia headquarters was housed where the Dutch ward during the Spanish plague in the seventeenth century, and hosted the victims of the War of Straws in the nineteenth century. Organized by Dom Gregrio Paixo, OSB (Leozrio Paixo Neto, b. Aracaju 1964), Bishop of the dioceses of Petrpolis, the book features essays by six experts who write about the monastic life of the Benedictines in Bahia, from its beginnings; the architecture and the construction of their monastery; the unique rare books in the library and their extraordinary sacred art collection. The enclosed CD contains Gregorian chants performed by the Benedictine monks of the Monastery of Saint Benedict of Bahia.
