"...an articulate and gripping story of abuse at the hands of a “Christian” psychiatrist..." ~ Amazon reviewer
Much has been written about childhood sexual abuse, but what about the sexual abuse of adult women?
Can adults be abused? Can adults be victims?
The answer is yes. And the problem is rampant. Sadly, therapists abuse women, pastors abuse women, doctors, bosses~in fact, wherever there is an imbalance of power, there is great potential for exploitation.
One study showed that 12% of male therapists and 3% of female therapists have admitted to engaging in sexual activities with at least one patient. Another study found that on average, in a congregation of 400, 32 people have experienced clergy sexual misconduct in their community of faith. While we hear about abusive pastors and abusive clergy, abuse by therapists is rarely discussed.
And the abuse is not only sexual in nature. Victims abused by counselors or therapists may experience emotional abuse, psychological abuse, spiritual abuse, and sexual abuse. Even worse, many women find themselves trauma-bonded with their abusers, and as a result, are unable to walk away.
When therapists abuse clients it is considered an abuse of power. And the damage is staggering. Women who have suffered from this horrific form of betrayal trauma come out wondering...What happened? Was this abuse? Am I at fault? How did this happen?
Prayed Upon is both a memoir and a self-help book about surviving adult therapist abuse. In it, I hope to address: The inner workings of the abuse process in adult victims How past childhood sexual abuse can make adults vulnerable to sexual predators How perpetrators groom adult victims How sexual predators use gaslighting and other manipulation techniques to trap their victims How and why victims develop trauma bonds with their abusers The arduous journey of healing from sexual abuse and possible routes to justice The stressors and injustices adult women face when they choose to come forward The knowledge that recovering from adult sexual abuse is entirely possible when we discard our old self-image and replace it with our identity in Christ And, finally, if we have faith in God no tragedy is too dire that He cannot use it for good
Prayed Upon is the story of one woman’s escape from the abuse of a respected, church-going psychiatrist. Amy reaches out to Dr. Dolion for help with depression, but instead of providing healing, he leads her down a path of deception and betrayal. His office, which initially feels like a sanctuary, becomes a psychological prison, one from which Amy will have to fight to free herself.
Prayed Upon, a true story depicts Amy’s journey from victim to thriving child of God. Her brutal honesty provides an inside look at the warped beliefs that early abuse instills; beliefs that make adult victims vulnerable to sexual predators. Her story shines a light on the under-reported sexual abuse of adults and ultimately the way victims can gain freedom from the bondage of shame that abuse leaves behind.
