In 1560 the painter, architect and writer Giorgio Vasari (1511-74) was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-74) to design a large buildine adjoining Palazzo Vecehio as a suitable seat for the city's magistracies, in other words the Uffizi or “offices” for the administrative and judicial system of the increasingly powerful duchy of Tuscany.
